October 1, 1908: Henry Ford debuts his Model T car, regarded as the first automobile available to the masses.

October 2, 1869: Indian Civil Rights leader Mahatma Gandhi is born in Porbandar, India.

October 4, 1941: Anne Rice, author of “The Vampire Chronicles”, is born in New Orleans.

October 11, 1975: The very first episode of “Saturday Night Live” airs on NBC, hosted by comedian George Carlin.

October 13, 1983: The first American cell phone network opens in Chicago–Ameritech Mobile Communications, later renamed AT&T Mobility.

October 14, 1964: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.  He donates his prize money to further the Civil Rights cause.

October 16, 1923: Walt Disney officially founded the Walt Disney Company, operating out of a small office in Los Angeles.

October 20, 1971: Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg is born in Long Beach, Calif. as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.

October 21, 1879: Thomas Edison successfully tests his first light bulb, and is eventually credited with producing the first commercially usable light bulb.

October 23, 2001: Apple releases the first generation iPod.  The 10 GB iPod was priced at $499.

October 30, 1938: The novel “The War of the Worlds”, by H.G. Wells, is broadcast via radio.  Many listening Americans, unaware that it is fiction, panic and believe that aliens from Mars are invading New Jersey.  

October 31, eighth century: After Pope Gregory II establishes Nov. 1 as All Saints’ Day, the night before becomes known as All Hallow’s Eve.  It is celebrated originally by the Celts, whose traditions reach back thousands of years, but over time, the holiday becomes secular.  The Celts believed that on this day, their priests would be able to predict the future more easily.
