Ever wondered why jack-o-lanterns cover the fence for a day in October? On Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Old Salem Museums and Gardens will host its annual children’s pumpkin carving contest. The contest will be held at the Salem Square, on the corner of Academy and South Main Streets. Old Salem will provide pumpkins to participants while supplies last. Children are asked to bring their own carving tools and must be accompanied by an adult. Prizes will be awarded in different categories. Winners will be contacted and also announced on Old Salem’s Facebook page on Oct. 26. Participants are also asked to leave their jack-o-lanterns at the Salem Square fence until Sunday, Oct. 25. On this date, Old Salem will host Trick-or-Treat in Old Salem in the evening. At 7:30 p.m., those who wish to take their jack-o-lantern will be able to do so.
