To quote a classic, “Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it.”
While Mean Girls certainly didn’t get it entirely wrong (anyone can dress however they choose without facing negative consequences no matter what day of the year it is) lets take a look at what it really means to have a fun, sex-positive Halloween.
As with all things, sex especially, its important to remember that this is your life and you make the rules. It is all about what YOU want. While it is unfortunate that there are societal expectations for women to dress provocatively for Halloween, know that how you dress is ultimately up to you. If you want to take the chance to expose a little skin then go for it! If you would prefer to wear a costume that covers all your bits then do that! The most important aspect of picking your Halloween costume is that you are comfortable and showing off as much, or as little as you want.
Along those lines, if you dislike the overly sexed-up nature of Halloween, it is fine to explain to others what your values or reasons are, but do not make assumptions about others and their beliefs. Just because someone chooses to dress a certain way doesn’t mean that person is a “slut” or “whore”, or even that they are an unknowing victim of a patriarchal society. Slut shaming unfortunately happens most often amongst women. This Halloween let’s make sure that we respect each other’s decisions and refrain from slut shaming our fellow Salem sisters. The sexiest costumes are those that we can appreciate in an environment that is accepting of all choices.
