SGA prepares for another “Spooktacular” Halloween carnival

It’s that time of the year again; time for pumpkins, ghosts, and the SGA Halloween Carnival. Every year, SGA sponsors a Halloween Carnival as a community service project to support Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Winston-Salem.

“SGA has sponsored the Halloween Carnival for at least 15 years and has grown to become one of the most popular

events for Salem faculty and staff to bring their children,” says Dean Krispin Barr, Dean of Student Affairs and the advisor to SGA.

All SGA-funded clubs and organizations are required to sponsor an activity; however, non-SGA funded clubs and organizations take part. An estimated 20 clubs and organizations are expected to participate this year.

Senior and Honor Council Chair Virginia Sparkes has taken part in the Halloween Carnival for all four of her years at Salem. “I love seeing the different variety of activities from all the clubs and organizations. Groups have done matching games, pin the eye on the pumpkin, and last year Mortar Board gave out books, instead of candy. This is a great community event that allows people to be creative, get involved, and volunteer for a good cause,” Sparkes states.

In addition to the carnival, SGA partners with Residence Life to sponsor trick-or-treating in the residence halls.

“Students, usually first-years, dress-up, decorate their room doors, and hand out candy to children attending the event. Anyone interested in helping should inquire with their RC about which halls are participating,” says Dean Barr.

Sparkes adds that students are encouraged to dress-up and be active in the event. “It is important for young children to gain exposure to a college environment. The Halloween Carnival is a great way to do just that, while offering fun games and activities for the children to enjoy,” says Sparkes.

The 2014 SGA Halloween Carnival will be held on Tuesday, October 28 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Bryant Hall. All clubs and organizations participating should email SGA@salem.edu by Saturday, October 25 with their activity idea for approval.

Happy Halloween!
